History
It all began near the end of the 19th century in Nipigon, Ontario where William McKirdy experimented with mixtures to make life among the blackflies at least bearable, resulting in the development in 1906 (patent in 1911) for "an alleged new and useful improvement in fly repellants". With some scientific help, he concocted Repalfly from citronella, a grass steam-distilled and imported from Ceylon. His son, Jack McKirdy moved production of the formula to Fort William, ON (now Thunder Bay). In the 1970's the business moved to Kingston, Ontario and was run by John McKirdy. The family business is now being run by the 4th generation, Ian & James McKirdy.
